Stand With Silicon Valley Security Officers ~ End Poverty Pay in Silicon Valley ~ Tech Can Do Better!
What: Rally for Silicon Valley Security Officers
When: Thursday, August 17th 10am-11am
Where: Charleston Park, 1500 Charleston Rd, Mountain View
I finally see some hope in my life because I’ve started organizing with my fellow Silicon Valley security officers to form a union and bargain collectively with our employers.
My name is Anabelle. I’m a security officer at a major tech company in Silicon Valley. I work forty hours a week and never say no to overtime. I also supplement my income with various jobs in the “gig” economy.
I used to have an office job with good pay and benefits, but my parents became terminally ill, and I had to leave my job to be with them . I was a full-time caregiver, navigating the doctors’ appointments, piles of bills and the confusing healthcare system. My savings ran out, I maxed out my credit cards, and I fell behind on my bills.
After my parents passed, the care of my disabled sibling became my responsibility. I make less than $18.00 an hour. I’m able to afford a month-to-month room for my sibling, but not housing for both of us. As a result, I have been living in my car for the past few years. I miss things about living in an apartment, like being able to take a bath and relax. I try not to think about it. I find it helpful to not focus on myself.
I finally see some hope in my life because I’ve started organizing with my fellow Silicon Valley security officers to form a union and bargain collectively with our employers.
Please stand with us as we work our way out of poverty. We are stronger together!
