Security Officers Win
After taking to the streets in July, more than 7,000 SEIU-United Service Workers West security officers in Los Angeles and the Bay Area have ratified a new four-year contract that will significantly improve the lives of working people and their families by bringing more racial and economic justice to communities throughout the state.
The contracts lower annual health deductibles to $500 and provide 100 percent employer-paid health premiums to officers working in smaller and/or suburban sites beginning in 2021.
In the Bay Area, officers will see a $2.40 per hour raise in San Francisco, $2.30 in East Bay-Tier 1, and $1.55 in East Bay-Tier 2 over four years.
In Los Angeles, officers will receive a $2.10 per hour raise downtown and in Century City-Tier 1(a), $2.10 in the Westside-Tier 1(b), and $1.55 in other-Tier 2 areas.
Los Angeles officers also won an additional paid holiday starting in 2020 and an additional paid sick leave day starting in 2021—bringing them to parity with the paid leave time enjoyed by Bay Area officers.
Wage gains in this round of negotiations were 45 percent to 55 percent higher than wage gains under the previous contract.
Officers also negotiated for expanded nondiscrimination language and hiring outreach to minority communities.
