SEIU Higher Education Workers Local 2007

SEIU Higher Education Workers (HEW-CA) Local 2007 was chartered in
January 2007 to represent workers at private universities in
California, and currently represents over 1,200 workers at Stanford
and Santa Clara Universities.  Our members perform service,
maintenance and technical work for universities, including food
services, residential maintenance, craft and trade work, and
technical support for research programs.  Our members are proud of
our role in making our universities world-class institutions.

Our partnership with other Local Unions in USWW is driven by the
widespread use of outsourcing and subcontracting by universities in
food service, custodial service, landscaping, security and other
services.  United, we will fight to stop the use of contracting to
undermine wages, benefits and working conditions.  Ensuring high
quality services to our universities demands good jobs that provide a
good quality of life for workers with dignity and respect on the job.

Universities have always played a critical role in movements for
political and social change, preparing the leaders and decision-
makers of tomorrow.  Student movements have been growing nationally
around the need for living wages, prohibiting sweatshop abuse, and
protecting the rights of workers to unionize.  SEIU HEW-CA will build
real and lasting partnerships with student organizations to
coordinate unified political and organizing efforts.

A coordinated strategy to unite students and workers in California
universities can help shape a better future for all working people.
